Which line spacing should you use?

Notebook paper sold in the United States comes in three standard rulings. The spacing is the distance from one line to the next, and it decides how large the handwriting on the page can be.

RulingLine spacingTypical use
Wide ruled11/32 in (8.7 mm)Grades 1–5, larger handwriting, people with motor or vision difficulties
College ruled9/32 in (7.1 mm)Middle school, high school, college notes and most adults
Narrow ruled1/4 in (6.4 mm)Small handwriting, dense notes, fitting more on one sheet
8 mm8 mm (0.31 in)Standard A4 exercise books in the UK, Europe and Australia

If you are not sure, start with college ruled. Children who are still forming letters usually find wide ruled easier, and switch to college ruled somewhere around fourth to sixth grade. For handwriting practice with a dashed midline, use primary writing paper instead of regular lined paper.

The red margin line and header space

Standard notebook filler paper has a vertical red line about 1¼ inches from the left edge and a taller blank band at the top. The margin keeps writing away from the binding or hole punches, and teachers use it for comments and grades. The top band is where the date and title go. Both are on by default here; turn them off for edge-to-edge lines when you want the most writing space.

Printing tips

  • In the print dialog choose Actual size or 100%, not “Fit to page”, so the spacing stays exactly as chosen. Switch on the ruler check mark if you want to measure it.
  • Most home printers cannot print to the very edge of the sheet. Keep a margin of at least 5 mm so the outer lines are not cut off.
  • Light blue or gray lines use very little ink and fade into the background once the page is written on.
  • Turn on the hole-punch guides if you will put the pages into a three-ring binder; the circles show where to punch.

Other ways to use it

Lined paper is not only for school. People print it for letter writing, journaling, recipe cards, copywork, songwriting and penmanship practice. Landscape orientation gives long lines for writing music lyrics or labeling, and the custom title header turns a sheet into a ready-made worksheet or form.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is college ruled or wide ruled paper bigger?

Wide ruled has the bigger gap between lines: 11/32 inch (about 8.7 mm) compared with 9/32 inch (about 7.1 mm) for college ruled. That means fewer lines per page on wide ruled paper.

How many lines are on a page of college ruled paper?

A Letter sheet of college ruled paper with the usual top band has about 35 lines. Turn off the header space and you get a few more.

Can I print lined paper on A4?

Yes. Choose A4 under Paper size. You can keep the US rulings or pick the 8 mm ruling used in most A4 exercise books.

Why are my lines closer together than expected?

Your printer is probably scaling the page. In the print dialog choose “Actual size” or set scale to 100%, then print again.

Can I print lined paper in other colors?

Yes. Pick any line color, from pale blue and gray to black for high contrast, and the PDF uses that color.

Is the lined paper free to use for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for home, school or business use. No sign-up and no watermark.
