How to make a block poster

  1. Upload a picture Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP image. It stays on your computer; nothing is uploaded.
  2. Choose the poster size Set how many pages wide the poster is. The height follows the picture’s shape.
  3. Set overlap and marks Add an overlap for gluing, cut marks and page labels so the sheets are easy to assemble.
  4. Download and print Download the PDF and print every page at actual size, then trim and join the sheets.

How a block poster works

A home printer only prints on one sheet at a time, but a picture can be split into a grid of tiles and printed one tile per page. Lay the pages out in order, trim the white edges, tape or glue them together and you have a poster several feet wide for the price of a few sheets of paper. The PDF includes an overview page that shows which tile goes where.

Picking the right size

Pages wideApprox. poster width on Letter (portrait)Approx. width on A4 (portrait)
215 in (39 cm)38 cm (15 in)
323 in (59 cm)57 cm (22 in)
431 in (78 cm)76 cm (30 in)
646 in (118 cm)114 cm (45 in)

Widths assume a 10 mm unprintable margin per sheet and no overlap. The poster height follows the proportions of your picture. A larger poster needs a sharper source image: as a rule of thumb, aim for at least 100 pixels per inch of poster width for a poster viewed from across a room, and more if people will look at it up close.

Overlap, cut marks and labels

  • Overlap repeats a narrow strip of the picture on the right and bottom edge of each page. A dashed line marks where the next page starts, so you glue the next page on top and small trimming errors disappear.
  • Cut marks are short lines in the corners that show where the printed area begins, so you know where to trim the white margin.
  • Labels print a small row-and-column code (A1, A2, B1…) in the margin of each sheet, so you can assemble the poster in the right order.

Assembly tips

  1. Print at Actual size. Scaling breaks the alignment between pages.
  2. On every page except those in column 1, trim the left margin along the cut marks. On every page except those in row A, also trim the top margin.
  3. Assemble one row at a time on a large table: lay each trimmed page over its left neighbour with the cut edge on the dashed line, glue, then join the rows the same way.
  4. A glue stick causes less wrinkling than liquid glue. Clear tape on the back works for temporary posters.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I print a large picture on multiple pages?

Upload the picture here, choose how many pages wide the poster should be, download the PDF and print all pages at actual size. Then trim and join them.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is processed entirely in your browser and never leaves your computer.

What image resolution do I need for a poster?

For a poster seen from a distance, about 100 pixels per inch of poster width is enough. A 3-page-wide Letter poster is about 23 inches wide, so a 2300 pixel wide image works well.

What does overlap do?

Overlap repeats a thin strip of the image on the edge of the neighbouring page, which hides small trimming errors when you glue the pages together.

Can I make a block poster on A4 paper?

Yes. Choose A4 as the paper size; Letter, Legal and Tabloid are also available.
