How to make Engineering paper

  1. Pick the grid Keep the standard 1/5 inch grid or switch to 1/4 inch or 5 mm squares.
  2. Choose tint and header Turn the pale green background and the Name / Date / Page title block on or off.
  3. Set paper size Letter is standard in US schools; A4 is available for everywhere else.
  4. Print or download Download a PDF with the number of pages you need, or print directly.

What makes engineering paper different

Engineering paper, also called engineering computation paper, is the light green gridded paper used in college engineering, physics and drafting courses. Three features set it apart from ordinary graph paper:

  • A 5 squares per inch grid with a darker line every inch, so values can be read and plotted to a tenth of an inch by eye.
  • A pale green tint. Green is easy on the eyes and makes pencil work stand out. On the bound pads sold in stores the grid is printed on the back of the sheet and shows faintly through, so it stays visible but does not appear on photocopies.
  • A title block across the top with spaces for name, date and page numbers, plus a heavy rule under it.

When you print at home the grid is on the front of the page, which is easier to see and still very light. If you scan your work, turn off the tint for a cleaner white background.

How engineering students use it

Engineering homework is usually written one problem per page, in pencil, with a box around the final answer. A typical layout is: givens and a sketch at the top, the equations used, the worked solution in a single column, and the boxed result with units. The grid keeps free-body diagrams, circuit drawings and hand plots square and to scale.

Header fieldWhat to write
NameYour name and often the course number
DateThe due date or the date of the work
Page / OfPage numbers, for example 2 of 5, so loose pages stay in order

Saving ink

The tinted background covers the whole sheet. If you print many pages on an inkjet printer, choose the ink-saver preset below: same grid and header, white background.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is engineering paper green?

The pale green tint is easy on the eyes and makes pencil writing contrast well with the grid. On commercial pads the grid is printed on the back so it does not show on photocopies.

What grid size is engineering paper?

Standard engineering paper has 5 squares per inch (1/5 inch squares) with a heavier line every inch.

Can I print engineering paper without the green background?

Yes. Turn off “Pale green background” or download the ink-saver preset.

Is there an A4 version?

Yes. Choose A4 under Paper size, or download the A4 PDF from the presets.

Which side of engineering paper do you write on?

On store-bought pads you write on the smooth front side, where the grid shows through faintly from the back. On this printable version the grid is on the front.
