How to make hexagon graph paper
- Pick the hex size Side length from 1/8 inch to 1 inch, or a custom size in millimeters.
- Choose the orientation Flat-top hexes form columns; pointy-top hexes form rows.
- Style the page Paper size, orientation, line color and weight.
- Print or download Download the PDF or print at actual size.
What hex paper is good for
- Tabletop and board games. Hex maps give six equal neighbours to every cell, so movement and distance work the same in every direction. 1 inch hexes match standard miniatures.
- Chemistry. Drawing benzene rings and other ring structures for organic chemistry.
- Quilting and crafts. Planning English paper piecing (“grandmother’s flower garden”) and hexagon tile layouts.
- Design and art. Honeycomb patterns, mosaics, logo and pattern sketches.
Flat-top or pointy-top?
Flat-top hexes have a horizontal edge at the top and line up in vertical columns; pointy-top hexes have a corner at the top and line up in horizontal rows. Many war games use flat-top hexes with numbered columns, while many RPG world maps use pointy-top. Choose whichever matches the game or pattern you are copying.

| 1/2 in | ≈ 0.87 in | Quilting plans, board game prototypes |
| 1 in | ≈ 1.73 in | Battle maps for 25–28 mm miniatures |
Frequently asked questions
What is hexagon graph paper used for?
Game maps, organic chemistry rings, quilt and tile planning, and honeycomb designs.
What size hex grid is used for miniatures?
Hexes about 1 inch across the flats are standard. Choose a side of 1/2 inch for roughly 0.87 inch hexes, or 1 inch sides for large hexes.
What is the difference between flat-top and pointy-top hexes?
Flat-top hexes have an edge at the top and form columns; pointy-top hexes have a corner at the top and form rows.
Can I print hex paper on A4?
Yes. Choose A4 in the generator; the hex size stays the same, so the page simply holds a different number of hexes.
Is honeycomb paper the same as hex graph paper?
Yes. Honeycomb paper, hex paper and hex grid paper all use the same six-sided tiling, usually with flat-top or pointy-top orientation.
